HIGH FREIGHT RATES

SUVA HAS ADVANTAGE AUCKLAND PENALISED A report was made to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce recently, indicating that freight rates in general are 10s a ton higaer from London to Auckland than from the same port to either Suva or Sydney. It was stated that relatively low rates to Suva prevailed in order to meet casual competition, mainly foreign, and that the high rates of freight to New Zealand, ports were largely due to the large amount of time spent by overseas vessels at New Zealand ports instead of concentrating on loading at one, or at most two, of the large ports. The chamber is to bring the question before the overseas shipping committee at Wellington.
