PENROSE “CASUALS”
DISMISSED WORKMEN PRIME MINISTER EXPLAINS An explanation of the dismissal of eight men from the railway workshops is furnished by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, in a telegram to Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau. “I have been making inquiries,” Mr. Coates says, “and find that in consequence of the completion of several large maintenance jobs in and around Auckland, also the completion of the painting programme, the department is left with a large surplus of casual staff for whom work is not available in the department. In this connection it was proposed to pay off seven labourers and carpenters. The matter of finding work for these casuals is under consideration.”
