Riccarton Horses for Trentham
RAPIER IN GREAT FORM MONEY ORDER WOUND UP (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. From the first appearance of Uii weights Rapier has been one of th* popular fancies in Christchurch for th« Thompson Handicap, and following upon his remarkable track trial on Thursday last, there was a general rush to support him for next week's big mile race. He has been coupled extenaively with fancied candidates in the Railway Handicap, and now that it has been definitely announced that he will be ridden in his Wellington engagements by the premier Southern horseman, A. E. Ellis, he is bound to start the ultimate favourite for the Thompson. One of the most brilljap; beginners in the South, Rapier possesses the necessary brilliance to get a good position in the early stages of the big mile race, and after his recent smashing successes, the general• opinion held by prominent Riccarton judges is that he is a class above the opponents he will oppose at Trentham. Quarter Deck has improved out of ail knowledge since her successes at Wingatui and Riccarton and. by reason of her excellent gallop the other morning when she decisively defeated Sudden Storm over a mile, indicates that the First Higli-weight Handicap at Trentham is well within her grasp. She h&s only 10.3 to carry and promises io start a warm favourite for the ten furlongs event. Lancer has improved since the Motukarara meeting, and though he could perform creditably in high-weight events at Wellington, he is not in tire same class as Quarter Deck. However, Lancer is susceptible to a lot of im? J provement, and with age on to him he may develop into a fair handicap performer. The two-year-old Prickles, owned by 11 Sir George Clifford, continues to im- B press early morning visitors to Ritv fl carton, and she has done so well since 1; her lust public appearance that she ■ is likely to show to great advantage jjg at Trentham. The Armourette —Psychology young- fl ster in G. Pine’s stable galloped in ei- Jj fortless manner over five furlongs on M Thursday, and she should be capable K of a fine effort at her next start. She K will be piloted in her Wellington en- f gagements by the Southern light- 1;. weight, L. J. Ellis. Philippic ran a long way below ex- fl pectations at the Motukarara meeting. | but he has freshened up a good deal | during the last few days, and he may | atone for his recent failure at an early || date. Money Order lias never looked bet- | ter than at present, and the manner in which he has acquitted himseli on a the tracks since his successful outing at Wingatui, suggests that he is ® | great buckle. With T. Green in w saddle the Paper Money - be solidly supported for the --i Handicap, and he is going to be to beat. He is a great mud or * e ’ ■« if the track is on the soft side ne jfc be in his element. After the Ellerslie meeting Euialw did not do at all well, but she picked up a lot lately and is ear ~" her best form. She will leav ® Trentham on Monday with the o I members of Mason’s stable. Scoff outclassed his opponents in th* Motukarara Handicap last w^ eK i,. j he should run a big race in the i kori Handicap at Trentham next He is a very brilliant colt ana j stands up to his work is likely u> valuable sprint races. Silver Coot is in good nick Wellington engagements, and pro that the track remains firm » hard to dispose of in the Handicap. However, he is a very ward gelding in heavy going, it is at all wet for the opening races he is likely to be r ' the concluding day. He is a veo liant sprinter, who promises big name for himself nest s rJ~T ra j-r Satrap galloped poorly on T and though he will oppose, a w . in the St. Leger, the classic race » no means at his mercy. fl I • n a t
