NAPIER PARK RACES
SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE GOSHAWK WINS CHIEF EVENT RAASAY CONTINUES WINNING (Special, to THE SUN) NAPIER, Friday. The course was soft at Napier Park to-day, when the autumn meeting of the Napier Club was commenced. There was a fair attendance and the racing was interesting. Goshawk won the Cup and the Flying fell to Arrow Lad, while Raasay was much too good for the two-year-olds. The sum of £11,758 was put through the machine, an increase of £1,031 on the first day last year. Favourite's Good Price Red Fuchsia was favourite for the but at a good price. He ran to the front two furlongs from home and won without being extended by a length and a-half from Revel, with Modern about the same distance away third. Comedy Prince fell. Moa Bird Fails Moa Bird and Tanagra were almost evenly backed in the Esk Handicap, in which Kahu Ariki, Airforce and Maureen were in the van approaching the home turn. Once into the straight Tanagra came out of the ruck and finished on well to beat Airforce by a length. Mountain Heath was a good third, and Addlepate, Kahu Ariki and Moa Bird next. Moa Bird drew the rails and dropped to last, but made up a lot of ground in the run home. Mountain Heath and Airforce might be worth bearing in mind. Easy for Raasay Backed to odds on, Raasay won the Sapling Stakes attractively. He was in behind Amplifier and Millais to the straight, and then came away to win nicely by two lengths, while Millais and Amplifier dead-heated for second, and Clarendon and Sylvan Dale followed. Clarendon might improve a lot shortly. Connisseur threw R. Reed during the preliminaries, but was caught and started. Kinross bolted three miles before the race and was withdrawn. Tresham Unlucky Tiega apd Kilmiss were withdrawn from the Cup, and White Fang and Tresham were the favourites. Goshawk and White Fang led past the stand with Black Mint in third place and Tresliam in the middle of the field, which was fairly well bunched. White Fang took charge and led along the back from Goshawk, Black Mint, Atareria and Tresham. There was not much change on the way to the straight, where White Fang began to falter, and Goshawk went on in front. Tresham got clear and challenged Goshawk, but the latter hung on and won by a length, with Black Mint another length away third. Perle de Leon was fourth and Atareria fifth. Tresham did not get a really clear run over the last part of the trace, and was rather unlucky. White Fang had every chance, and eventually finished last. New Owner's Luck A good favourite scored when Tintoretto won the Autumn Handicap. Lipsol and Lin Arlington made the early rujmning, while Tintoretto was in behind the bunch, and Cool Card, who moved off badly, was last. Lipsol led Lin Arlington and Peneus into the straight, and Bonhomme, Tintoretto and Haurangi were next, all close up. Tintoretto finished far too well for anything: else, and won by a good half length from Lin Arlington, with Peneus a length away third and Haurangi fourth. Bonhomme was last. Before the race Tintoretto was sold to J. M. Samson, the Southern owner. Keen's Contest High Heather and Keen were well backed for the Maiden Scurry. Brown Sugar led to the straight from Keen, but in the run home Keen did best and won by a length. Clavers finished fairly well in third place, half a length behind Brown Sugar, and Molong and High Heather were next. Arrow Lad Scores Shirley, The Hawk and Arrow Lad were favourites for the Flying Handicap When the field settled down Coot and Plain Sailing were in front from Shirley and Arrow Lad, and this was the order nearing the home turn, where Arow Lad improved his position and soon took charge. The Hawk moved up smartly from the middle of the field, but Arrow Lad stayed on nicely to win by a couple of lengths. Royal Damon was third, two lengths behind The Hawk, and Shirley. Coot, Plain Sailing and Star Stranger followed. Star Stranger was fairly big in condition, and tailed the field all the way. Shirley was rather disanpointing and so was The Hawk, but not to the same degree. Favourite Well Beaten Star God went out favourite for the Redcliffe Handicap and failed. Gordon Swiff and Avazone led to the straight from Sandburr, and there Hynnotrc came on the scene and won by a length from Gordon Swift, with Avazone third, Sandburr fourth and Star Gcd fifth.
