SEARCHLIGHT CARNIVAL
DOMAIN ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT There has scarcely ever been shown to New Zealanders a sports carnival in which 150 girls compete at once in strenuous organised games, or a girl sprinter does 75 yards in 9 l-ss. or hundreds of girls gaily dressed in their house colours march with military precision. Yet these are only some of the items on the programme of the Inter-House Girls’ Carnival, to be held at the Domain on Wednesday night.
An added feature of the entertainment will be massed band music. Various bands have been allotted different routes, but they will all arrive at the Domain about 7.45 p.m. on Wednesday night. The Victorian College Maori Girls will give an exhibition of poi dancing, as recently given before their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of York, during their visit to Auckland. The searchlights from Fort Cautley have been transferred to the Domain and special floodlights are en route from Wellington. When these are placed on the grandstand they will so clearlv illuminate the ground that every event will be clearly seen by the spectators. In addition to individual and team events there will be a special gymnastic and physical drill display by no fewer than 350 girls, representing 13 houses. In support of this carnival the employers of all soft goods houses in the city are allowing their girls to leave business at an early hour several afternoons this week, for the purpose of practising. The girls are keen and working hard, and the grand march and assembly will show what can be done with training, massed effects and colourful harmony. The proceeds of this searchlight carnival are being directed to the Mayor’s Unemployment Fund.
