MAORI LIFE

PRESERVED IN FILMS RECORD OF ARTS AND CRAFTS (.From Our Resident Reporter.') WELLINGTON, To-day. The Government Publicity Office is completing 15,000 feet of cinema film exposed at Rotorua and neighbourhood shortly after Christmas, and some interesting releases may be expected shortly. Every phase of Maori life, both old and modern, was photographed, and the completed pictures will be a unique and valuable record of Maori life and customs. An endeavour was made to cover all the customs of the native race, their canoeing and canoe-build-ing, agriculture, tattooing, wood-carv-ing, weaving, and in the handicraft pictures “close-ups” show every detail of how the Maoris do their weaving, the movements of the fingers being quite distinct in every motion. The films will be a valuable adjunct to the Maori Arts and Crafts School recently established at Rotorua.
