FRANKLIN RACES
Attractive Card for Opening of Annual Meeting To-Morrow ALL ROADS WILL LEAD TO PUKEKOHE EXTENDING on this occasion over two days, the annual meeting’ of the Franklin Racing Club, to be held at Pukekohe to-morrow and on Monday, promises to be the most successful in the history of the club. Excellent fields have been paid up for opening day, and patrons are assured of some rare sport.
THANKS to the recent rain, the course at Pukekohe is in excellent condition, with a plentiful sole of grass, so that trainers should find the conditions for racing congenial for their charges after being confined to hard tracks. There will be nine events on the first day’s card, the opening race having to be divided on account of the large number of acceptors.
A field of 11 remains in the Frank i Cup, and together with splendi
fields in the other contests there should be no dearth of runners. A review of the prospects for to-morrow follows. The first race is the divided one, in which the totalisator will be open but once, and the dividends paid on the winners only of each heat. This event is the 11.45.—80M8AY HANDICAP Of £165, 6 furlongs First Division st lb st lb Wee Marble 9 0 Solanio ... 7 13 Gay Cockade S 5 Still Jim . 7 13 Bright Comet 8 4 Sand Bag . 7 13 Brilliant Kerry Dance 7 13 Light 8 2 Ponticus ... 7 13 The Dansanf. 7 13 Hakanoa . . 7 12 St. Amans geld- Merry Light 710 ing 7 13 Josie Melville 7 10 White Light 713 Huephano . . 710 Scaramouche 7 13 Even with 17 horses in each section the fields will be quite large enough. In this division those that appeal are Wee Marble, Bright Comet, Brilliant Light, The Dansant, Solanio, Kerry Lance, Josie Melville and Huephano, and it is probable that the winner will be one of these. The actual favourites may be BRILLIANT LIGHT and KERRY DANCE. 11,48.—Second Division. Glenetta ... 8 8 Catamaran . 7 13 Bom harder . S 5 Storm Fiend 713 Bannock ...83 Bris 7 13 Idun .... 82 Welcome Sir Henry . 7 13 Knight 7 13 Vallar .... 7 13 Betty Zane . 7 10 Royal Trek . 7 13 Diamond Balanagar . . 7 13 Queen 7 10 Master Waiau Lady 710 Clement 713 Liona ... 730 Here Ellerslie stables should play a prominent part, for with Bombarder and Idun they have a useful pair. Others to be in request will be Glenetta, Bannock, Storm Friend, Vallar. Diamond -Queen, Waiau Lady and Liona, but there is reason to believe that the actual favourites will be BOMBARDER and IDUN. 12.30 PUNI HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP Of £125; li miles Quincoma . . 11 2 Ballachulisli 011 Ural la . . .10 13 Scot Free ..91 Kawini ... 9 11 Mashoor ... 9 0 Rarangi ... 9 11 Blago ... 9 0 Wiltshire . . 911 Glencanny . 9 0 Harbour Spalmore ..90 View ... 9 11 Tago San ..90 Glenstar .... 9 0 The topweight appears to be the right sort for an event of this description, for lie is up to weight, and moreover he is very well. Uralla, too, is well, but her bad last the second day at Te Aroha, in the race won by Royal Doulton, will cause her to lose some friends. Ka-
wini can hardly be.ready, and Rarangi will need to improve. Wiltshire showed pace for a first and second at Rotorua, and others that are worthy of mention are Harbour View, Ballachulish, Scot Free, and Glenstar. The ttoalisator fancies at the close of operations will probably be QUINCOMA and URALLA. 1.15 BUCKLAND HACK HANDICAP Of £115; 7 furlongs Winsome Boy 9 0 Wee Marble . 7 10 Modest Boy . 9 0 Palmares ..78 Dress Circle .86 Welcome Liaison .80 Home ... 7 6 Appellant ..80 Abbey Queen 7 6 Bright Dawn 8 0 Desert Knight 7 2 Aiwa.vs U ’* * 7ii Wyoming ..71 * * * * _ 7 H Restaurant . 7 0 Gold Clip . . /II Marita ... 7 0 Catapult . . 7 10 This is a big field, and the ability to get a good position early will play an important part. Those capable of doing so are Winsome Boy, Modest Boy, Liaison, Appellant, Bright Dawn, Tau-
rimu, Always, Catapult, Palmares, and Welcome Home. To reduce this lot still further one would be inclined to favour the quartette comprising Liaison, Appellant, Taurimu and 'Welcome Home, and the duel for actual favouritism should lie between WELCOME HOME and LIAISON. 2.0 FRANKLIN CUP Of £425; li miles. Eden Hall . 9 0 Princess Desert Glow 8 9 Ronnie 7 6 Gala Day . 8 2 True Blood . 7 6 Le Choucas . S 0 Corinax ... 7 2 Royal Micrometer . 7 0 Doulton 7 13 Baby Bun , 7 0 Sir Archie . 7 7 It is more than probable that this field of eleven will be reduced by starting time, and it is possible that the actual runners will not number more than eight. Figuring at the head is the consistent Eden Hall, and he may wind up the public fancy, for he generally finishes in a place. Desert Glow will not lack friends either, despite his Te Aroha failure, for on this course he will probably be a different horse. Gala Day has his chance here to make amends for his Te Aroha misfortune, and he is well enough to do a turn for his popular owner. Le Choucas will go well if started, but it is more probable that the stable will rely upon the topweight. Royal Loulton, who would have
taken all sorts of beating if given a run, is said to be a nonstarter. Sir Archie has been moving along briskly in his work at Ellerslie, and as he should see the journey out he is given a good chance. Princess Ronnie has the pace, and if she can be induced to give of her best will surprise. True Blood is a likely lightweight, and as he is said to be going nicely in his preparation it would not occasion surprise if he bobbed up at the right end. Corinax is an improving horse, and after his good Rotorua Cup win better things can be expected. With Micrometer a doubtful runner the only other to call for notice is Baby Bun, and if she can keep out of any trouble she should be well forward, for her trainer has her in excellent fettle. T<? sum up, backers will no doubt decide in favour of EDEN HALL and DESERT GLOW. 2.45 WAIUKU HACK HANDICAP Of £115; 7 furlongs Value . . . 9 G Hone Heke . 8 10 Some Lady . 9 2 Glenetta ..84 Dimmer ... 9 2 Luxurious ..80 Bright Dawn 9 1 Liona .... 8 0 Takarunga . 8 11 Prince Papa . 8 0 This is just a nice-sized field, in which the following will have friends; Value, Some Lady, Dimmer. Bright Dawn, Takuranga and Glenetta. The actual favourites may be SOME LADY and DIMMER, for they will be able to run a merry seven furlongs. 3.30 TUAKAU FLYING HANDICAP Of £175; 6 furlongs Tea Time . . 8 1.1 Prince Otto . 7 7 Bally moy 11. 8 0 Automne . 7 0 Macroom . . 7 13 Muscarr ... 7 0 The fact that there are only half a dozen left in the sprint makes it rather a disappointing event, for there are fewer popular races than open six furlong flutters. Tea time, Ballymoy 11., Macroom and Prince Otto should have it on the two at the bottom, with TEA TIME and PRINCE OTTO disputing favouritism. 4.15 ONEWHERO HANDICAP Of £120; 1 mile 1 furlong Star Comet . 9 0 Adjuster . . 7 13 Micrometer . S 12 Always ... 7 13 Dress Circle 8 S Wee Marble 712 Schorr ... 8 5 Arch Queen . 7 5 Piet .... 83 Salamander . 7 0 Wee Puriri . 7 0 The middle distance hack performers will have their say in this race, and of the eleven remaining in the field Star Comet, Micrometer, Schorr, Piet, Adjuster and Arch Queen may be deemed the best. MICROMETER and PIET may divide the honours on the totalisator. S.O.—PUKEKOHE HANDICAP Of £150; 7 furlongs.
Ti Tree ... 8 6 Archeen ... 7 12 Te Koroke . 8 6 Pelham ... 7 7 King Merv . . S 2 New Moon . 7 6 Siaosi .... 7 13 Barometer . 7 0 Day Guard . 7 11 Archeno ... 70 Sleepy Sol . 7 11 Regent .... 7 0
This promises to be one of the most intreseting tussles on the whole day’s card, for there are some speedy sevenfurlong horses figuring in ttye field of a dozen, among them being Ti Tree, Te Koroke, King Merv, Siaosi, Day Guard, Archeen, Barometer, Archeno and Regent. The preliminary battle on the totalisator may rest in victory for either TI TREE or DAY GUARD. THE RIDERS Among the riding engagements made for to-morrow are the following: H. Wiggins.—Princess Ronnie, Vallar, Appellant and Archeen. T. Green.—Brilliant Light, Welcome .Home, Eden Hall, Dimmer, Prince Otto and Ti Tree. R. McTavish.—Gala Day, Bombarder, Siaosi and Glenetta. L. Manson.—Sir Archie, Huephano, Winsome Boy and Ballymoy 11. E. Ludlow.—Sleepy Sol, Prince Papa and Sir Henry. C. Brown.—Master Clements and Always. L. Pine.—Storm Fiend. S. Henderson.—Liaison, Schorr, Ballachulish, Hone Heke and White Light. T. Chaplin.—Scot Free and Josie Melville. W. Jones.—Baby Bun. Restaurant, Luxurious and Bannock. RACING FIXTURES March 9, 10—Napier Park R.C. March 10, 12—Franklin R.C. March 15—Waimate R.C. March 15, 17—Wellington R.C. March 17—Opunake R.C. March 17, 19—Ohinemuri J.C. March 21—Otautau R.C. March 21. 22—Rangitikei R.C. March 23, 24—Oarra-u J.C. March 24—Bay of Plenty J.C.
Will Do Better To-morrow Ti Tree ran badly in the open sprint at Te Aroha, and her showing was a body blow for her admirers, who had supported her to down the speedy Paganelli. She got away well, and thereafter was never in the hunt, and finally the Tea Tray filly finished well down the course. This was not her true form, and it is more than probable that she was not herself on the day. Ti Tree figures as top weight in the open seven furlongs at the Franklin meeting, and as this is her pet distance she will probably atone for her recent defeat.
Jumpers Getting Ready The near approach of the jumping season is heralded by the appearance in jumping events round the country circuit of the names of many wellknown hurdlers and ’chasers. For instance, at the Ohinemuri fixture next week the four at the top of the handicaps in the hurdle race are Archibald. Kawini, Mia Bella and Zircon, all of whom were figuring prominently in obstacle races last winter. Then in the steeplechase events at the same place are the names of Lord Star, Peter Maxwell, Glenotus, Prince Rufus, Taitaiata and Thigantliu. Sip Archie's Prospects Up to a mile Sir Archie has proved himself a pretty useful customer, and the manner in which he has finished on in his races is suggestive that he will run out a mile and a-quarter. He is to have his first race over this distance in the Franklin Cup, and, as he lias been doing fine track work he should not be outclassed. Sir Archie won nicely over a mile at Ellerslie at Christmas, and on that showing must be given a further chance of getting on the winning list before the country circuit concludes. The Archiestown gelding is looking as well, if not better, than ever before.
A Strong Hand J. Williamson’s stable is to be represented in the Bombay Handicap at Pukekohe to-morrow by no less than three horses—Bombarder, Vallar and Solanio. The first of the trio has already shown some good form round the country circuit, and he is good enough for the big lot opposed to him if he will do his best. Solanio was one of the team this mentor took to Sydney last year, and is now* striking some form. Vallar did a brilliant gallop at Ellerslie last week, and is obviously endowed with speed to burn. He is a chestnut by Valkyrian from Bellacity, and with some experience is going to win races. He has not yet faced the starter, but may be given his first outing on Saturday.
