NO LEGAL REMEDY AUCKLAND MAORIS PERTURBED Auckland Maoris are seriously concerned at the regrettable state of affairs which has arisen owing to the intermingling of Asiatics. Chinese and Hindus in particular, with the Maori people. This matter was discussed at leiigih at last night's meeting of Te Akaran.i Maori Association, at which Air. Jann s i Rukutai was in the chair. Howe\ « r. much as the situation was to be d» - i plored. it was stated there was no real legal remedy available. The meeting decided, however. t.» immediately communicate with Princess Te Puea Herangi. of Waikato, and other influential leaders of tinMaori people, and urge them to make their influence felt against tins As: i - tic intrusion. King Te Rata Mahuta. at Huntiy. is also being communicated with. It was felt that every moral effort 1 should be made to prevent this state of affairs continuing. Attention was again drawn to lb*' matter by a recent case at Panniun . In this instance a young Maori girl I who did not even know her own age 1 was living in a Maori-Chinese house.hold. and. according to the investigating officer's report, was forced to work hard carrying water to the gardens. The girl was committed to the charge j of the YVslfare Department after being found guilty on a charge of theft from a European household. It was stated at last night’s meeting that the Chinese in this case were I not held to be responsible for the girl's downfall.
