WATER RESTRICTIONS LIFTED FROM TO-DAY
WASTE MUST BE AVOIDED RAIN EFFECTS CEASE A special meeting of the Waterworks Committee last evening decided, to lift the restrictions on the use of water forthwith. It was stated, however, that care will still have to be taken to avoid unnecessary waste. The superintendent’s report showed that the dams are now holding 464,000,000 gallons and that the effects of the recent rain have now finished, the run into the dams having considerably dropped. Pumping at Western Springs will be discontinued early next week, the extra being for the purpose of testing a chlorine gas plant installed on trial. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, expressed the council’s thanks for the splendid way in which other local bodies and residents complied with the council’s request for the curtailment of use of water. FUTURE POLICY The council, at a special meeting last evening, discussed the city engineer’s report on the proposal to include the Hunua Ranges scheme in the city water policy. It is. understood that at the next meeting of the council the recommendation will be that the scheme be included in the policy. The point at issue will be whether the Lower Nihotupu pumping scheme will be proceeded with before the development of Hunua. There are two streams in the Hunua Ranges, the Mangatangi—the bigger—and the Mangatawhiri—the nearer. The suggestion is to first develop the Mangatawhiri with a storage of 1,400,000 gallons.
