The Log Book

PERSONAL.—Captain R. L. Davies is at present in command of the Wingatui having relieved Captain A. B. Sizer, who has transferred to command of the Kaitangata.

Captain J. L. Brisco has transferred to command of the Kaituna, relieving Captain A. H. Howie, who is ashore awaiting orders.

Mr. E. J. H. Taylor is now third officer of the Wai-kouaiti.

Mr. N. Buxton, chief officer of the Kairanga, has joined the Kaponga in a similar capacity, relieving Mr. H. L. P. Wilson, who is on holiday.

Mr. A. W. Rabbitts, second officer of the Kittawa, has relieved Mr. J. Joyes as second officer of the Kamo. The 'latter officer is awaiting instructions at Dunedin.

Mr. D. Luckett has relived Mr. E. R Pate as third officer of the Otokia. Mr. J. W. R. Gillespie, of the Union Company head office staff, has been appointed to the sea staff as assistant purser of the Maori.

Captain A. 11. Davey, late of the Maunganui, has gone to New Plymouth to take command of the Waikawa. Captain E. J. McClellan, late of the Tamahine, is to take charge of the Kahika. Captain B. Corby, who has been on holiday leave, is again taking charge of the Union Company’s oil-tanker Otokia. Captain W. Lloyd, who visited New Zealand last year in command of the Delphic, has succeeded Captain F Hart in command of the Corinthic, which is due at Wellington next Sunday from London and Southampton.

ARAWA SAILING TO-DAY.—At six o’clock this evening the Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Arawa is to be dispatched from W ellington with passengers, mails and cargo for Southampton and London, via Panama.

THE CANADIAN PROSPECTOR.—The Canadian Prospector, which sailed from Auckland on February 4 for New York, Boston and Halifax. was reported at Panama last Monday.

WALTON HALL FROM NEW YORK. —The steamer Walton Hall has been chartered to leave New York on April 15 with case oil and general merchandise for discharge at New Zealand and Australian ports.

HUNTINGDON SAILED. At 7 o'clock this morning, the Federal steamer Huntingdon was dispatched from Wellington with a full cargo of New Zealand produce for Southampton and London and West Coast ports of the United Kingdom, via Panama.

HURUNUI FROM LONDON. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Hurunui is scheduled to sail from London next Thursday with general merchandise for discharge at Auckland. Dunedin and Bluff. She is due at Auckland on April 21.

CANADIAN CHALLENGER SAILING. —The local office of the Canadian Government Line advises that every effort is being made to dispatch the steamer Canadian Challenger from Auckland this evening for New York, ~Boston and Halifax, via Panama.

MAHANA AGAIN DELAYED.—The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company advises that the Mahana. at present loading at Napier, was delayed there by rain on Monday and Tuesday. She is expected to clear the East Coast port to-day for the Wanganui roadstead for further loading.

QUEEN ELEANOR FOR N.Z.—Running under the auspices of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s Eastern Canadian Service, the steamer Queen Eleanor is to leave St. John. New Brunswick, on March 2S for Auckland. Wellington. Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne and Sydney.

KUROW POSTPONED AGAIN.—The departure of the Union Company’s steamer Kurow for Southern ports has been postponed now till noon on Saturday next The vessel will now take cargo for Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff. She is at Queen’s Wharf.

RANGITOTO DELAYED..— As the Northern Steamship Company’s steamer Rangitoto was clearing the Thames wharf this morning she fouled a steel hawser, which became entangled round the propeller. At low tide the wire will be removed. The vessel will not leave for Auckland until 6 o’clock this evening.— Own Correspondent.

SOUTHERN CROSS BERTHED. The Melanesian Mission steamer Southern Cross, after lying in the stream since December, was berthed yesterday afternoon at Prince’s Wharf to undergo overhaul preparatory to sailing on May 1 on her periodical cruise to the mission stations in the New Hebrides and Solomon Islands.

KING EDWIN DISCHARGING. —The King Line’s new motor-ship, King Edwin, which is discharging Texas case oil at Western Wharf, is to be dispatched from Auckland on Saturday afternoon next for Napier, New Plymouth and Australia to complete. The . New Zealand Shipping Company is acting as the local agents.

CORINTHIC REPORTS.—Advice has been received by L. D. Nathan and Company that the White Star liner Corinthic is expected to arrive at Wellington at 6 a.m. on Tuesday next, March 13, from London and Southampton. The vessel is bringing passengers and mails for disembarkation at Wellington, and cargo for discharge at Port Chalmers and Lyttelton.

NIAGARA FROM SYDNEY.—This afternoon the Union Company's Royal Mail steamer, Niagara, is to be dispatched from Sydney for Vancouver, via Auckland, Suva, Honolulu and Victoria with passengers, mails and cargo. The vessel is expected to arrive at Auckland on Monday morning next, and at 3 o’clock the following afternoon she is scheduled to continue her voyage to Canada.

WAITEMATA REPORTS.—The Union Company’s trans-Pacific cargo steamer, Waitemata, has reported by wireless that she will arrive at Auckland on Sunday morning next with cargo from Pacific Coast ports of America, via Apia. After putting out the local portion of her cargo, the vessel is to proceed to Wellington, Melbourne and Sydney to complete.

MIDDLESEX RETURNING.—The local office of the New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Federal Steam Navigation Company’s steamer, Middlesex, is now due back at Auckland from Napier for final loading on Wednesday next, March 14. The vessel is scheduled to sail from here on March 17 for London, Avonmouth, Glasgow and Liverpool, via New York and Halifax.

WAIPAHI SAILING TO-DAY.—Having completed the discharge of her cargo of bananas from Suva, the Union Company’s Island fruit steamer, Waipahi, is to be dispatched from Auckland at 4 o’clock this afternoon for Newcastle for bunkers, thence to Sydney to load general cargo for Fiji. The W'aipahi is scheduled to sail from Suva on her return trip to Auckland on March 30.

MATATUA’S MOVEMENTS. A. S. Paterson arid Company advises that the Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer, Matatua was expected to leave Nelson to-dav for Wellington to continue loading for Home. The vessel is to be dispatched from Wellington on Saturday for Auckland, where she is due the following Monday to complete filling up for London, via Panama. She is to be dispatched finally from here on March 16. OMANA RETURNS.—After completing the discharge of her cargo of Port Stephens hardwood poles at Tauranga, the Lamb steamer Omana returned to Auckland last evening and berthed at the Central Wharf to commence loading for Australia. The vessel is to sail at the end of the week for Opua and Kaipara to complete. The Northern Steamship Company are the local agents. She is to fill up with timber for Melbourne and Sydney.

CAMBRIDGE AT WELLINGTON.—The Federal Company’s steamer Cambridge was to have arrived at Wellington last evening from Timaru, for further loading. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that an endeavour will be made to dispatch the ship from Wellington on Monday for Napier and Auckland, to fill up for London, Avonmouth, Glasgow and Liverpool. She is due here abbut Friday next.

CANADIAN HIGHLANDER REPORTS —According to a radio message received by the Canadian Government Line, the steamer Canadian Highlander is expected to arrive in the stream at Auckland this evening from Halifax. The vessel, which has cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru and Dunedin, will probably take the Canadian Challenger’s berth at the Prince's Wharf, to unload the local portion of her cargo. , ROTORUA TO LOAD.—At present discharging general cargo from London at Queen’s Wharf, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Rotorua is to commence loading for Home, and has been fixed to sail from Auckland on Monday next for Napier, Lyttelton and Wellington to complete. She is expected to clear the capital on March 31 with passengers, mail and cargo for London and'Southampton, via Panama.

HINEMOA REPORTS AGAIN.—A further radio report was received this morning by the local agents, Messrs. Sped ding, Limited, from the New Zealand Government steamer Hinemoa, stating that the vessel expects to arrive in the stream at Auckland at 9 o’clock to-morrow morning with passengers and cargo from Norfolk Island. She has been allotted a berth at King’s Wharf. Her departure again for Niue Island has been postponed till 5 o'clock the same afternoon. NEW “MONARCH" VESSEL.—From the yards of Napier and Miller, Old Kilthe steamer Caledonian Monarch, 4ooft in length between perpendiculars, by 56ft in breadth, by 30ft 6in depth moulded, about 5,835 tons gross, and to carry 9,40 tons deadweight, to have a sea speed of 12 knots loaded, was launched on July 11. The owners are Raeburn and Verel, Ltd., Glasgow. Years ago “Monarch” vessels came to Australia regularly, and such names as the Irish Monarch, Indian Monarch, and Ocean Monarch may easily be recalled to memory, says a Sydney writer.

TRANS PACIFIC CARGO STEAMERS. —The Waikawa, from Pacific Coast, via Papeete and Napier, was to arrive at New Plymouth yesterday. She will proceed thence on Friday to Nelson, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Bluff, Westport and Auckland. The Wairuna, from Newcastle, via Suva, is due at Vancouver on March 17, and will proceed thence to San Francisco. The Hauraki, from the Pacific Coast, via Auckland and Wellington, arrived at Sydney on Monday last. She will proceed to-day to 'Melbourne and Adelaide to complete discharge.

The Waiotapu, from Newcastle, was expected to arrive at Suva yesterday and will proceed thence to Fanning Island, Vancouver, San Francisco and Los Angeles. *

The Waihemo, from British Columbian ports, is expected to clear San Francisco to-morrow for Auckland. Wellington, New Plymouth, Melbourne and Sydney.
