TRUCK WRECKED IN HEAD-ON COLLISION
DRIVER INJURED SMASH AT TAKAPUNA A head-on collision between a motor-bus and a truck at Hall’s Corner, Takapuna, about 5.30 yesterday afternon, resulted- in the driver- of fhe latter vehicle, Mr. George Metcalfe. being taken to hospital suffering from a broken leg. The bus, which- is owned by the North Shore Transport Company, and was driven by Mr. Leonard Colquhoun, was turning from Hurstmere Road into The Terrace, on its way to the depot. The truck, which is owned by -Briggs and Company, carriers, was proceeding towards Brown’s Bay, and was loaded with coal and other goods. The force of the impact threw the load forward heavily, carrying away the wooden cab. The driver and his companion, Mr. Briggs, narrowly escaped being crushed. Mr. Metcalf was brought to Auckland by the Devonport ambulance. Mr. Briggs had two fingers cut by glass, and was aide to proceed home after treatment. The radiator of the truck was smashed, the windscreen shattered and the engine forced back through the floor-boards. The bus escaped with a broken headlight and a dented mudguard. At the ordinary meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council last evening. it was decided to erect a “silent policeman” at Hall’s Corner, as a means of preventing the occurrence of similar accidents in the future.
