RATS NIBBLE MATCHES
FIRE IN CLOTHING FACTORY Rats nibbling wax matches are thought to be the cause of an outbreak of fire shortly before six o’clock this morning in the factory of F. M. iKng, Ltd., wholesale clothing manufacturers, Albert Street. An employee of the firm had seen a rat on a shelf a few days earlier, near where a box of matches had lain for some time. The prompt arrival of the fire brigade undoubtedly prevented what might have been a big blaze, and the fire was confined practically to the shelves where it originated. There was a good deal of damage done to women’s overcoats, dresses and cloth used in their manufacture. Mr. King estimates this at several hundred pounds. The building is insured for £B,OOO in the New Zealand Office and the stock for £14,000.
