Ellers lie Track Notes

This Morning's Trials

Bllerslic have picked up as the result I of recent rains. The course is once j more in excellent order and provides j the best of going. The conditions overhead were ideal this morning for training operations, to which more than the usual interest was attached on account of the Franklin meeting being held at Pukekohe on Saturday and Monday. The course proper was open, with the trestles about 25 feet out, and the number three grass was also in use for fast work. All the following try-outs were executed on the course proper. Sir Archie Well Sir Archie was accompanied by Judge’s Box in a spin from the sevenfurlong peg. Given the worst of it in the jump-off, the pair got to the end of the initial furlong in 13 3-5, and then they cut out the quarter in 25 3-5, three furlongs in 39 4-5, the first half mile in 53 1-5, and they finished up their task in 1.34. The pair finished very well, with Sir Archie, on the inside, doing it easily. The chestnut is in lino fettle and will not lack friends in the Franklin Cup. Huephano came home from the halfmile post in 53 1-5, cutting out the last three furlongs in 39 2-5. He shows some promise. Timed from the last four of a five furlong gallop, Palmares finished in front of Bombarder, with The Lover further back, in 52. The grey got a break at the start, but Bombarder put up a sterling effort and pleased considerably. A Good Mile From the new mile post Baby Bun and Gala Day jumped away together, and they were in full sail passing the peg. The initial furlong took 12 3-5, while they reeled off the quarter in 24 4-5, three furlongs in 36 1-5, halfmile in 50*4-5, five furlongs in 1.4, and despite the warm pace they came home* together from the three furlongs in 41 2-5, making 1.45 2-5 for the full distance. Gala Day, on the outside, was moving freely at the end, while his companion was also doing it well, apparently relishing in her task. Both are in the Franklin Cup, and Baby Bun may spring a surprise with her light weigh t. Avon Court, ridden out, finished some lengths in front of Tea Money at the end of four furlongs in 51 3-5, the last three being cut out by Avon Court in 38 3-5, An Improved Galloper Scot Free, with a good weight up. ran the last seven of eight furlongs in 1.34 2-5, leaving the first two behind in 24 3-5, and the first half-mile in 52. It was a good effort for a jumper. Daylight, who appears to be coming back to his old form, hit out pleasingly in a spin ovei* six furlongs. He left th£» first two behind in a moderate 27 3-5, and finished from the four furlongs in 53, his time for the full distance being 1.20 3-5. Restaurant and Modest Boy were quickly ahead of Sleepy Sol (who was muscle sore) in their bout from the seven furlongs, the first two finishing with little separating them in 1.33 2-5. It was a nice gallop, for they went well over the first part, running the first three in 38 1-5. Could Have Done Better Corinax and Piet went from the new mile post, being picked up by The Thorn at the live furlongs. Timed from the seven furlong peg, the first quarter was slipped over in 24, three furlongs in 37 1-5, and the half-mile in 50 2-5, ample evidence that they were travelling. The trio finished abreast in 1.33 4-5, and of the bunch Corinax appeared to be doing it very easily. He is one of the Franklin Cup fancies. The two-year-old filly by Romeo from Pearl de Mont moved very freely in a sprint from the three furlongs in 39 4-5, and Bizarro finished well in front of Diamond Queen at the end of six furlongs in 1.21 3-5, the first three taking 39. Prince Papa beat White Light over a slow six furlongs in 1.26 4-5, and Royal Trek and Marita were on terms, with Merry Light a good length and a-half further back, at the end of half a mile in 54. Princess Ronnie's Speed After the breakfast interval a Franklin Cup aspirant in Princess Ronnie was sent over a mile. From a standing start she moved over the initial furlong in 13 3-5, two in 25 2-5, three in 38, the first half mile in 52 4-5, and the complete journey in 1.44 3-5. It was a good effort and as the mare is

in great heart just now she must possess an exceptionally good chance in her immediate engagements, always provided she runs generously. Balnagar was well ahead of the two-year-old Taneriri at the conclusion of I four furlongs, cut out in 52 3-5. The latter, however, was carrying a good deal of surplus condition and will require several gallops before being in racing form. The Best Half Storm Fiend enlightened track watchers by the easy manner in which lie disposed of Welkne and Ahi Ngaro over half a mile in the good time of 50. Storm Fiend is to contest the second division of the Bombay Handicap at Pukekohe, and his recent track form points to him being handy in that event. Harbour View covered six furlongs v.ell in 1.20 2-5, his last five taking 1.7. He will be having his first race for some time at Pukekohe on Saturday, and may require racing to bring him to his best. Ballymoy 11. and Luxurious were associated in a spin over six furlongs in 1.21 3-5. They were practically on terms at the finish, but neither was bustled. Sylvanum and Winsome Girl weif trotted round to the three-furlong peg. and sprinted home from there in 38, with the former doing it best. The Inside Grass On number three grass Salamander and Scaramouche had little between them when they covered five furlongs in 1.7 3-5, Archibald doing the same distance in an easy 1.8 1-5. Parfait Amour went half a mile in 51 2-5, and Valsier three furlongs in 37 4-’. Segment, Justify and SemiCircle left to a ragged start from the four furlongs post, and the first pair were wide out on the turn. They finished in front, however, in 52. Wee Marble, Bannock and Archeno finished in that order at the end of five furlongs, cut out in the nice time of 1.3 2-5. It was a pleasing gallop on the part of Wee Marble. Solanio and Blue Spear were partnered in a sprint over half a mile, the time registered for that distance being 52 4-5. The former had a slight advantage at the finish, but Blue Spear also pleased. The three-year-old Vallar was not out for time when she was exercised over half a mile. This youngster sprinted well last week. The Jumpers It is several months now since Memsahib was sent out over the obstacles. This morning, however, ridden by T. Williams, lie was schooled over four hurdles and jumped them in easy fashion. Kamehameha acted as tutor for Master Doon, who made his debut over three pony hurdles. His. exhibition was quite satisfactory. For the first time since his appearance at Ellerslie Monday (R. Olive) was given a lesson over four pony hurdles, which he jumped nicely. Simplicitus (Sharkey), Glenotus (Rae) and Kamehameha (Williams) were associated in a lesson over the sod, double and stone walls. The firstnamed pair jumped well, but Ktimehameha screwed at his fences. FRANKLIN CUP FAVOURITE AMISS The early favourite for Saturday’s Franklin Cup, Royal Doulton, Is still suffering from the effects of the kick received at Tc Aroha on the second day, and there is considerable doubt as to whether she will be able to take her place i:i Saturday’s field. TIMARU TROTS POSTPONED TILL TO-MORROW Press Association. TIMARU, To-day. Owing to heavy rain overnight making the track greasy, the trotting club’s meeting has been postponed till to-morrow and Saturday. It is still raining and the outlook is not top promising.
