Man Overboard
EXCITEMENT ON FERRY STEAMER RESCUED MAN STRUGGLES TO RETURN A man who jumped overboard from the ferry steamer Makora on one of her early trips to Devonport from the city this morning created considerable excitement and kept several men engaged after he was recovered. The Makora was in mid-harbour when a middle-aged man in working clothes suddenly jumped off from the end of the boat. The ship was immediately stopped and run alongside and a lifebuoy was flung out on a rope. The man in the water seemed somewhat dazed, and obeyed an instruction to put his shoulders through the buoy. In a minute or two he was aboard again, but this was no sooner accomplished than the man realised that he was on board, and immediately tried to get into the harbour again. As he was a big man ana powerful he created considerable disturbance, and it took half a dozen men to hold him down. He was eventually tied up and brought back to the city, where he was handed over to the police, who are making inquiries. MAN IN COURT Later in the morning the man, whose name is Jeffrey Cope, was charged at the Police Court with attempting to commit suicide. He was wrapped in a blanket, and was scarcely dry. Sub-Inspector McCarthy applied for a remand until to-morrow.
