TOBACCO-GROWING

TAURANGA PROSPECTS Recently the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce communicated with the Department of Agriculture on the subject of tobacco-growing, in which local residents are interested. As a result, Mr. C. Lowe, the department’s instructor, visited the district on Monday evening and addressed a meeting. He said that it would be necessary to form an association, which the Government might help with an instructor. He advised the building of a kiln for curing the tobacco. He said, further, that he thought the prospects for tobacco-growing in Tauranga were good. Shed-cured tobacco would cost about £l2 an acre, and should be worth at least £SO. With leaf treated in a kiln, however, the top prices would be about £ SO.
