AUCKLAND TO HAVE BIG SPORTS CARNIVAL
MEETING ON MARCH 31 PROGRAMME OUTLINED At u special meeting of members of the Auckland Athletic and Cycling Club held last evening, it was decided to hold a grand athletic carnival at the Domain on Saturday, March 11. An exceptional programme, carrying with it £7l 10s in prizes, is to be given in cycling and running events. The big cycling event is the Auckland wheel race of two miles, fot which £2O is given. Other handicap events are half, one, and three-mile events, also carrying good prize monej . In the cash running section the principal event is the Auckland Gift Handicap, of 120yds, for which £ls is given. A 220yds and 440yds open handicap aro also on the programme. Amateur cycle races will also be included. The fastest cyclist in the Dominion is being negotiated with to appear, and together with the local cracks an exceptionally fine afternoon’s sport is assured. The running events alone should be worth seeing, as all the North Island crack professional runners have already signified their intention of competing. Included in the promised local entries are such well-known cycling names as J. Harcourt. S. Hayes, F. Prior, A. R. 'White, H. Pelham, M. Randrup, J. Henderson. H. Lawler and R. Caniton; the cash ruanars be in* XI. Hudson. D. Moles worth. W- Toms, J. XL Shaw. TV. Nicholson, <ft» Gardiner, 1. Littlewood and T. Little, the last three being crack League footballers of | Auckland.
