HULK IN DISTRESS
DARTFORD TAKES IN WATER TOWED TO WHARF The harbour authorities late last evening noticed that the Union Company’s old hulk Dartford, anchored in the stream, appeared to be in distress. A Harbour Board official immediately went out in a launch to investigate, as it was thought that she had sprung a leak. The hulk had a large quantity of coal on board, and was very low in the water. The ebb tide, aided by a strong cross-wind, had lapped the sea over the hulk’s side and her position became very precarious. The Harbour Board’s tug. Te Awahina. was dispatched early this morning and towed the Dartford alongside Central Wharf, where the water was pumped out. For many years the Dartford was a regular trader to Australia, and on more than one occasion held her place with the old-time clipper ships which t sed to carry wool to the English markets. With the advent of steam she sought trade in many parts of the v/orld. Later she became a training ship for the Union Steam Ship Company in which connection she became famous. She was built in 1877 and her net tonnage is 1,273.
