DEATH OF BRO. COLUMBANUS MAN WITH EMPIRE CHARGE The Rev. Brother Columbanus, assistant superior-general of the Marist Order in the British Empire, died in an Auckland private hospital yesterday. T>ORN in County Cavan, Ireland, he received his early education in Scotland, where he entered the Marist Brothers order while yet a young man. He proved himself to be an ideal principal of schools and colleges, and in 1910 he became Superior of the Province of South Africa. In 1914 he was appointed assistant-superior-general of the order. He was mainly responsible for the welfare of the principal English-speaking provinces: Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. It was necessary for him to visit each school in these provinces once every three years. While visiting the South Sea Islands he contracted the illness -which proved fatal. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Cathedral this morning, and the burial service was conducted at Panmure Cemetery.
