SPORTS AT RAWENE
SOME CLOSE FINISHES GOOD CHOPPING EVENT (From Our Own Correspondent) RAWENE, Monday. The Rawene Athletic Sports Club was favoured with ideal weather for holding the annual sports meeting on the recreation ground last Saturday at Rawene. There was a large attendance, exceeding all expectations, from all parts of Hokianga harbour and district, and from the Bay of Islands as far south as Okaihau and Kaikohe. The river presented a pretty sight with all the launches moored. The public was rewarded by seeing large fields compete in all the events, both athletic and axemen’s, with close finishes being the order of the day. The chopping events created most interest, particularly in the principal event, when two-fifths of a second separated the first and second man, with the third man a second slower. The running track was hard, with heat cracks showing the effects of the drought preventing any fast times being recorded. The secretary. Mr. R. R. Herk, and his committee are to be congratulated on the ground arrangements in particular and the organising generally. Of the numerous booths on the ground the “Haangi” was the most popular. The gate takings amounted to £SO, from which it is estimated there was an attendance of about 750 visitors. The following are the results: ATHLETIC School Boys’ Cup, 100, 200 and 300yds.— N.
