Gothic’s Win In Saturday’s Newmarket Dash
Trivalve Not All Out in the Classic FLEMINGTON MEETING OPENS By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. MELBOURNE, March 4. The Victoria Racing Club’s Autumn Meeting opened at Flemington to-day. The weather was dull and threatening, but there was a large attendance, which included a number of New Zealand visitors. The State Governor, Lord Somers, was present. In the decision of the Pines Hurdle Race Fiscus was always well placed and won nicely. Some time back Fiscus was bought by Mr. J. E. Brewer for 500 guineas. Trivalve led all the way in the St. Leger, and was never extended. The Cyklon colt has now won over £25,000 in stakes. He ran the last mile and a-half in the St. Leger Stakes in 2.34. Amounis was fourth early in the Essendon Stakyes, but took charge in the straight and won brilliantly. He was ridden by the ex-Xew Zealander, H. Cairns. Favourite’s Great Finish Gothic finished with a remarkable run in the Newmarket Handicap, and won narrowly. This was Gothic’s second successive victory in the race, and he received a great ovation. Gothic cost Mr. S. Green 1,659 guineas when he bought him in England. Gothic is trained by a former New Zealander, Lou Robertson. J. Pike, who rjade Gothic, stated that his mount missed the jumpout at the start and was interfered with twice. After the race the stewards held an inquiry into the cause of interference with Gothic, Avant Courier, and Biskra, and decided that the trouble was caused by Numenia steering an erratic course. Gothic and Biskra collided a short dis-
tance from the post. A. Reed, rider of Sans Culotte, stated that his mare tired badly. Ponese, rider of Chrystal, stated he had a good run, and thought early in the race he would win.
Moilison led always in the Sires’ Produce Stakes. This is his fourth win in as many starts. The colt cost 700 guineas when bought as a foal by Mr. E. M. Pearce. The owner of Moilison won the Sires’ Produce Stakes in 1924 with Arendal. Mollison’s dam, Molly’s Robe, won the Newmarket Handicap in 1919. The imported Medmenham was eighth early in the contest for the Brunswick Stakes, but finished fast and won in the last stride. He scored a victory at Caulfield last week.
