RACING AT AKAROA THORNDALE’S CUP OPHIR’S LAST RUN (Special to THE SUN; CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club held its autumn meeting at Motukarara to-day, in glorious weather. The course was in excellent order, and there was a good crowd in at- ! tendance. The totalisator handled | £11,575, against £9,895 10s. Amor, Scoff, Synonym and Great i Star were evenly backed for the i Motukarara Handicap, while the re- ! mainder were at a good price. King’s t Jester and Weather Rid gave trouble ! at the start, and when the barrier was j released they were slow to move. ; From a traggling start Amor immediately took up the running, and racing : past the half-mile he showed the way ; to Great Star, Scoff and Rigmarole. Amor was still the leader across the top, and he was first to turn for home from Great Star and Scoff, with the others well beaten. The latter received a run on the inside entering the straight, and getting to the front ! ■without an effort went on to beat Amor by a neck. King’s Jester was two lengths away third, followed by Great Star, Court Jester and Rigmarole Scoff scored a ridiculously easy victory and returned a false price. WINNER FOR TRENTHAM Backed down to odds-on for the Terawera High-weight Handicap, Lancer thoroughly justified the heavy support. The favourite was smartest to begin, and leading throughout he defeated No Response by a length. Salamat, the other runner, was outclassed. Lancer, who has been nominated for high-weight events at the approaching Trentham meeting, is on the improve, but he may not reach top class. MADE UP HIS GROUND Peter Daunt was backed down to a short price in a good betting race for the Wairewa Trot, and though he was a long way back early he finished in resolute fashion in the straight and got up in time to beat Lady Brent by a neck. Prince Audo, who broke twice on the trip, was a good third, while Master Don was most prominent of the others. Rose Mavia looked a possibility six furlongs from home, but she failed to come on. THORNDALE AT LAST Thorndale and Satrap were heavily backed for the Peninsula Cup, but the latter wound up the ultimate favourite. From a walk-up start Magna Charta w r as smartest to begin, and going out the straight he showed the way to Philippic, Thorndale, Satrap and Carnot. Magna Charta led along the back from Satrap, Philippic, Thorndale, Ophir and Carnot, but nearing the five furlongs post Philippic lost his position, and then Thorndale ran into third place. Magna Charta was still the leader across the top, and he was first to turn for home from Thorndale and Satrap. Thorndale ran up to the leader at the furlong peg, and Satrap also joined issue. For 50 yards the trio raced in line, but Thorndale wrested the lead after a hard tussle and went on to beat Satrap by a length. Magna Charta was a similar distance away third, followed by Carnot and Philippic. The winner, who has raced most consistently this season, deserved his success, but Magna Charta also placed an impressive performance to his credit. On a light preparation he ran out the 10 furlongs in excellent style, and he should soon win a middle distance event. Satrap again had every chance, but was well beaten, and his St. Leger prospects appear anything but bright. He may improve, however, but he is only a moderate three-year-old. Philippic disappointed. Ophir, who was pulled up at the top of the straight, broke a fetlock, and had to be destroyed. BIG FAVOURITE SCORES The Mason-trained Shalimar was backed down to favourite for the Ahuriri Hack Handicap, and she duly pulled her backers through. Greyfinch and Star Stranger 11. were smartest to begin, and the pair piloted the field along the back and across the top, but before the home turn was reached Star Stranger 11. dropped out. Greyflnch led into the straight from Shalimar, but the latter ran to the front inside the distance, and in a punishing finish beat Greyfinch by half a length. Honeycard was a similar distance away third, followed by Court Jester. Honeycard was the unlucky runner of the race. He was slow to begin, and was badly interfered with on a couple of occasions, and in gaining third place under such circumstances put up a performance of unusual merit. This was only his second public appearance. DON JOSE IMPROVES Moorland was sent out a warm favourite for the Kinloch Welter, but serious interference at the home bend robbed him of a good chance. Some Abbey was quickest to begin, and with Economist she showed the way round the far turn from Moratorium and Moorland. Don Jose moved up smartly across the top, and once straightened up for home he went on to beat Moratorium by two lengths. Moorland was a similar distance away third, followed by Economist and Some Abbey. After the race, the judicial stewards charged C. Eastwood, rider of Don Jose, with having interfered with Moorland and Moratorium, but after hearing the evidence of the jockeys concerned no action was taken. ONE FOR FINORA Singlespear was considered the best of good things for the Flying Handicap, but after having apparently every chance the favourite was beaten into third place. Heisler was first to begin, but when the field settled down Singlespear ran to the front and led along the back and across the top from Heisler, Flnora and Spode. Singlespear was firSt to turn for home, and just when he appeared to have the race in hand Finora flashed up on the outside and, quickly settling the favourite, went on to beat the fastfinishing Spode by a length. Singlespear was a neck away third, followed

Matagouri, winner of the Waihora Trot, was always in the picture over the last mile, and he eventually beat Florrie Pointer by five lengths.
