Picking Accused
CHARGE AGAINST POLICE “SHOWN PHOTOGRAPH BEFORE IDENTIFICATION” EVIDENCE IN COURT HAMILTON, To-day. A statement to the effect that the police had shown her a photograph of an accused person before an identification parade was made by a witness in the Hamilton Supreme Court this morning. The case was one in which a man named Theodora Thomas, aged 40 years, was charged with forging and uttering a cheque at Owhango for £2 10s last year. Evidence was called alleging that the prisoner was working for a farmer named Burley at that time, also that accused left his employ at the same time as the cheque was cashed. Mrs Floyd, wife of the storekeeper who cashed the cheque, admitted that she had been shown a photo, of the accused before the identification parade at Taumarunui. This was drawn from witness under pressure. She also admitted thaf the police had told her to say at the trial that she had had no difficulty in picking out the prisoner. The accused conducted his own defence and pleaded mistaken identity.
