By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. Received 9.10 a.m. WASHINGTON, Thursday. THE modernisation of the battleships Pennsylvania and Arizona has been approved by the Naval Committee of the House of Representatives.

reconstruction to be carried out in these ships includes the elevation of 14-inch and 16-inch guns. The Bill, as accepted, provides £2,960,000 for the purpose, replacing the Bill which proposed to modernise five capital ships at a cost of £6,934,000. Increases of pay up to 25 per cent, for submarine officers while on active

duty have also been approved. Enlisted men get slightly more than 25 per cent., their increases ranging from £ 1 to £6 a month depending on their length of service. The committee has also approved a fiat rate of pay of £2 an hour for navy divers engaged in salvage operations at a depth greater than 90ft. —A. and N.Z.
