MARS IN THE ASCENDANT
THE other leg of the Waikato double for Saturday ia the mile sprint—-Waipa Handicap—and With early selectors Taipare is the ruling favourite. Off the front mark, 2*lß, the grey gelding certainly looks enticing, but it must not be thought he is the only pebble on the beach. His failure in the 10-furlong farewell at the Otahuhu meeting should not cause punters to fall over each other to be on him at Claudelands, and oh that performance Mars (2.17) looks a better proposition. Just take a few of his performances last winter. First at Cambridge tin the mile and five-furlong heat, where he beat a useful field. Then second to Loch Moigh on the opening day of the Auckland June meeting, and later in the day first in a 10-furlong flutter. IVlars has not raced much this season, but is coming right and will be awkward on Saturday. Admiral Lock and Bingen King (2*18) are other possibilities in this heat, while Dick Dillon (2*15) is sure to make a good showing, if he escapes a penalty in the big event. Jov Bird \A/ill Sina
