GIVING EMPLOYMENT

NEWMARKET TO RAISE LOAN STREET IMPROVEMENT SCHEME At the ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council last evening, it was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, to raise an unemployment loan of £3,000. . This will be used to effect permanent improvements to Carlton Road and George Street and to alter the levels of Sarawla Street. The loan is to be repayable in 25 years. Interest and sinking fund will be covered by a special rate of Jd In the £ which is to be struck. A reward of £ 5 is to be offered by the council for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for giving false fire alarms. Certain city ratepayers complained through the Auckland Town Clerk that those outside the city are not observing the restrictions on water usage imposed by the City Council, although drawing their supply from the city reservoirs. In reply, it was stated that the conditions are' being enforced in Newmarket, proof being given by the decrease in the volume of water used.

The Mayor was elected as the representative of the council on a committee set up to discuss the farmlet scheme as a means of relieving unemployment. No cases of infectious or notifia.ble disease have been reported in the borough during the month.
