M.L.C.'S BIRTHDAY
LEAP YEAR BABY MANY CONGRATULATIONS When the Hon. E. W. Alison. M.L.C., of Auckland, celebrated his 17th birthday in 1924 —he was, of course, a leap year baby—he received hearty congratulations from Nancy Harrison, a little girl in Feilding. Nancy, as a matter of fact, was one of the first to forward congratu- , lations when Mr, Alison celebrated his i 18th birthday yesterday. The Legislative Councillor, as a matter of fact is really 76, but Nancy feels that j she has something in common with , him as she can also claim February 29 ; as her birthday. As Nancy’s mother is in hospital Mr. Alison sent out a special message I to her last night through the ether , from IYA. The little girl’s message was one of a large pile received yesterday by Mr. Alison. Among the many Parliamentary colleagues who also tendered their congratulations were the Prime Minister, Mr. Coates, and the members of the Reform Ministry, to whom Mr. Alison has given allegiance for many years. “Like the giant totara of the forest you have lived to a ripe old age, and have seen the last of many of your , contemporaries,” wrote Mr. W. K. ! Howitt, the North Shore representaj tive on the Auckland Hospital Board. ! Last night Mr. Alison was entertained by members of his family at a birthday gathering. Owing, however, ! to the recent death of his life partner. the function was not a public one. ! Mr. D. Carter, Auckland manager of ! the Union Steam Ship Company, and ' Mr. A. M. Gould, former Mayor of j Takapuna, tendered their congratula- : tions on behalf of Mr. Alison’s many friends.
