WORK AT ELLERSLIE PREPARING FOR FRANKLIN With Franklin only a few days off, training operations at Ellerslie now provide more interest. A large number of candidates claiming engagements at the above-mentioned fixture were given fast work this morning, and several of the trials were illuminating. The course proper (two trestles out) and No. 3 grass were the tracks most in use. COURSE PROPER Palmares and Bombarder opened proceedings by trotting round to the new five-furlong barrier and sprinting home from there in 1.4 4-5. Corinax proved much too good for Archibald when he beat him over six furlongs in 1.19 3-5, the last five taking 1.6 4-5. The former was about five lengths ahead at the finish, and if required could have done better. Heuphano travelled comfortably over half a mile in 52 2-5, while the two-year-old Justify ran a similar distance in 51 3-5. A GOOD MILE A good effort was that of Sir Archie, who was sent over a mile. Jumping off quickly from the mile barrier, he moved over the first furlong in 12 2-5, two furlongs in 25. three in 39 3-5. and the full distance in 1.45, the last seven furlongs taking 1.32. When Sir Archie is next seen out in public he will cot lack support. The Thorn travelled smoothly over half a mile in 52 3-5. After the breakfast interval Storm Fiend and Betty Zane were the first to begin operations, moving from the new post in 1.5 1-5. The former led throughout and was a couple of lengths in front at the end. The Franklin Cup candidate. Princess Ronnie, was responsible for a good essay when she covered seven furlongs in 1.30, the last six taking j 1.16 4-5. The daughter of Polydamon is in hearty condition just now, and her training tasks cite her as a possibility for the above-mentioned Cup. BOTH WENT WELL Archeno and Wee Marble were partnered over five furlongs, running that distance in 1.6. Archeno had a slight advantage at the end, but appeared as if she could have increased it. We?» Marble has now made a good recovery from the accident whicl} befel him re • cently, for he went nicely. Luxurious was ridd'"-’ out to beat Blue Spear over five furlongs. The time —1.6 —was not good. but the Lucullus gelding infused plenty of dash into his work. Harbour View was brought from Onehunga this morning and given a try-out over six furlongs. The time, 1.1.9 2-5, was fair, and he as if he could have improved upon that. Solanio, Winsome Girl and the chestnut colt by Archiestown from Bellacity; were associated in a sprint over four furlongs in the smart time of 49 3-5. The colt was ridden out to head off Solanio, with Winsome Girl, a couple of lengths further back. It was an enlightening trial, and depicts the two-year-old in J. Williamson’s stable to be more than useful. NO. 3 GRASS Salamander, Scaramouche and Modest Boy were engaged in a bout oyer five furlongs, the last half-mile talcing 53. The first-mentioned was seen to advantage at the finish, although Modest Boy could have done better. Royal Trek, Ossian and Silver Nun finished in that order in a sprint from the three-furlong peg in the good time of 38 4-5. Balnagar, alone, covered five furlongs in 1.5, the last half-mile in 52 3-5. After a lesson over the pony hurdles, White Light was restricted to an easy
six furlongs, the last five being run in 1.9 1-5. Newbury covered half a mile in 50 —a good sprint. He was not bustled at the end, and perhaps could have clipped a fraction or two off his time. THE JUMPERS Prince Papa (T. Chaplin) negotiated three pony hurdles in good style. White (J. showed im proved jumping ability by clearing four pony hurdes in a good manner. Spalmore had J. Sharkey as his rider when he was sent over four hurdles. The first two were no trouble, but the third obstacle he rapped_ badly and very nearly came down. With this exception it was a satisfactory effort.
