Inundated by Flood of Birthday Greetings TRIBUTE TO SHAKESPEARE By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Tues. Birthday congratulations from all over the world were received by Dame Ellen Terry, including a telegram from their Majesties. Dame Terry was inundated with letters, sonnets, poems and telegrams, the latter so numerous that the telephone was engaged all day long transmitting them. A postbag, which contained offers of patent medicines, cures for bronchitis and old-fashioned prescriptions for colds, was received. Great bunches of flowers arrived continuously. A special programme was broadcast, largely played by members of the Terry family, who acted again the principal successes of her long career. Birthday greetings were also spoken. Dame Terry, in her reply to the greetings which was also broadcast, said that the tribute to her was a tribute to Shakespeare and so to England, “for is not he the chief glory of England?” she asked. —A. and N.Z.
