A LONELY SWIM
Now that the craze for swimming long distances is rather thick among Auckland swimmers, it will no doubt be of interest to many of these “tide drifters” to learn that when Andre Majersky, champion swimmer of Northern Rivers, Australia, plunged into the Manning River in the early hours of a recent Saturday morning, his idea was to break his own record for a long distance swim from Wingham to Taree, a distance of 14 miles. He left Wingham at 1.5 a.m. under unfavourable weather conditions, swimming alone, not even a. boat following him. The water was very cold owing to a fresh in the river caused by the recent rains. He reached Taree at 6.52 a.m., and was prepared to continue his long swim, but, on the advice of his friends, he left the water. He had intended to swim for eight hours. His average of over two miles an hour under these conditions was a remarkable performance, and he reduced the time of his previous swim from Wingham to Taree by more than an hour.
