SAVING THE CONES MOUNT WELLINGTON RESENTFUL When the communication from the Town Planning Association regarding } the preservation of volcanic cones was under consideration at the Mount Wellington Road Board meeting last evening some very caustic remarks were | made regarding the queries contained in it. one member remarking that it was a bundle of impertinent questions and it was decided that the board take no action in the matter. KING COUNTRY FIRES HARD LUCK FOR HELPER TAUMARUNCI, To-day. A four-roomed house at Kakahi, : owned and occupied by Mr. H. Clark, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. Insurances are not available. While a neighbour of Clark’s, a man named Haigh. was assisting to quell the outbreak, a lire broke out in his own honey shed, which was totally de- 1 stroyed, together with over three tons of honey, a honey extractor and oil engine. Haigh was uninsured and will be a heavy loser. SUBURBAN WATER MOUNT WELLINGTON SUPPLY While the question of a water supply was under consideration at the Mt. Wellington Road Board meeting last evening, some very severe criticism was levelled at the supplies available from the neighbouring districts. Mr. Hotham stated that the Auckland supply was soup. Mr. Clair differed from his opinion, and while upholding the I purities of the town supply, expressed it as his opinion that the Otahuhu product was not good enough for sanitation purposes, and after a protracted cross-table talk, it was decided to persevere with the effort to secure a supply in the board’s own district. TE AWAMUTU BOROUGH COLLECTION OF RATES The fortnightly meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council was held on Monday evening, the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. G. Spinley) presiding. It was decided to apply to the Gov-ernor-General to have the Mechanics* - Institute section in Redoubt Street vested in the borough council as a reserve. The application of Mr. S. Adams for a refund of rates on an unoccupied dwelling was refused. It was clecided to imopse the 10 per cent, penalty after March 14. The town clerk had collected £6.400 since February 1. There was still £l/»og: outstanding. Accounts totalling £925 4s 7d were passed for payment. PAPATOETOE PROGRESS BIG POWER BOARD BUILDING Some little time ago the Auckland Electric Power Board purchased a site . in Papatoetoe on which *to erect a branch of their Auckland offices, and it is intended to put the work in hand immediately. Six months will be required to complete the extensive buildings. •which are to cost in the vicinity of £IO,OOO. During that time a specially selected clerical staff will be trained in their new duties. It is proposed that the new building will be the main branch, having under its jurisdiction all sub-branches of the board, thus relieving the Quay Street main office of considerable detail work. The office equipment has received much consideration, and the installations will be of the very latest labour-saving type. Residential quarters will be provided, and up-to-date demonstration rooms, included, and a garage will be attached, capable of housing several large lorries. After long and careful consideration the board decided on a section situated on the corner of Station Road and Rangitoto Avenue, in the very heart of the business area. DEATHS IN THE PROVINCE MR. A. PEARSE The funeral of the late Mr. A. Pearse, of Seddon Street, Otahuhu, took place yesterday, when a large number of ceiatives and friends of the deceased attended. Mr. Pearse had been a resii dent of Otahuhu for the past 20 years, and was highly respected by all. He I was a P.M. of the Lodge of Harmony. 2180, E.C. The-service was conducted by Canon Mason, and Wor. Bro. W. H. Pain.e, W.M., Lodge of Harmony, read the Masonic burial service. There was a large attendance of Masonic brethren, and representatives of other lodges attended. Deceased was well known in Karangahake and Waihi, where he resided for a number of years. MR. A. J. GORDON The adjourned inquest regarding the death of Mr. Andrew John Gordon, who ; was found dead on the roadside near j Waitete Bridge. Waihi, on Friday night, j was held on Monday evening. DARGAVILLE NEWS LOST PROPELLER FOUND The recovery of the propeller and shaft, which was lost by the Kaipara Steamship Company's S.S. \Vairua, some days ago. was effected by , Maori diver in the vicinity of Manga, whare yesterday. These missing parts were located on Sunday last by a ptirtv of divers. The propeller will ptobi ably be refitted on the NVairua at Helensville, thus saving the company I the heavy expense which would have otherwise been necessary for the purchase of a new one. ♦ • * The Loyal Dargaville Lodge, M.U 1.0.0 J., held a very successful meeting last night when a number of visiting brethren from Whangarei were present. An inter-lodge ritual competition for a banner, recently presented to the Dargaville lodge by Bro. Hitchcock, was the principal item of the evening programme. Dargaville was successful with a marign of 30 points over the challengers. Loyal Whangarei Lodge. The winning team comprised Bros. R. Page, L. Izod, P. Morris, C. Bernard and Passell. The judges were Bros. Byrne. Towers (Whangarei) and F. L. Izod (Dargaville). It is proposed to hold the next competition at Whangarei, when it is hoped that teams from the Whangarei. Hikurangi, Maungatepere and Dargaville Lodges will compete. PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD WORKS IN PROGRESS The Papakura Town Board met on Monday, Mr. James McCall presiding. A request for the use of the railway reserve for a fire demonstration was made by the Papakura Fire Bri.ga.de, and was granted. The Girl Guides were granted permission to hold a campfire at. Chalky Point. Water consumption for a fortnight amounted to 4,080,000 gallons, an average of 292.000 gallons a day. The peak reading was 328,000, and water is still coming over the spillway. The following Works Committee rei commendations were adopted: Clarke Road is to have two and ahalf chains of metal. Extra Labour is to be employed to cope with the reticulation work in Wellington Street and footpath construction work in Great South Road. The two-inch water main is to be extended to Mr. Keegan's property in Wharf Street (approximately 3.2 chains) at an estimated cost, including all connections, of £54. The Fire Brigade Management Committee reported that three fires (two houses and a motor garage) had occurred since last report. Fire pay to the amount of £2 14s was granted. Two appointments were made: (1) Mr. William White as temporary assistant traffic inspector, and (2) Mr. D. McFarlane as dog tax collector. A petition was received by residents and tradesmen using Dominion Road drawing the board’s attention to its deplorable state. As this road is partly in the Manukau County the request was reported to the Works Committee and the clerk instructed to forward the petition to the Manukau County Council (Dominion Road joins the Clevedon main highway a few chains past the board’s boundary). Attention was drawn to the unlimited use of the hose and its consequent evils by the Rev. W. C. Wood, who stated that as the water was all filtered this waste entailed a deal of expense. He also recommended the adoption of measures to ensure a good pressure in case of fire by asking residents to turn off all taps when the siren was heard. It was resolved to take the necessary steps to prevent waste, and to make further proposals relative to turning water off in case .of fire. MOUNT WELLINGTON WATER BOARD TO SINK BORE At the meeting of the Mount Wellington Road Board held yesterday evening it was reported that an estimated balance of £ 400 would be shown on March 31 in connection with the concrete road loan account. Mr. T. Beasley offered to disclose the site of a water supply, as divined by the Rev. Mason some time ago. but it was decided that the location. Lake Road, was too far away. Mr. Leggett, of Morrinsville, reported locating a water supply about one and . a-half chains on the western side of ■ the previous well. The Auckland City Council offered to deliver water at Lunn Avenue at the i price previously quoted, thereby saving the board a matter of some £2.000. but jit was eventually decided to call tenI ders for sinking a bore on the site ini dicated by Mr. Leggett, such tenders : to be returnable by March 13. It was decided that the full board meet representatives of Messrs. Bray j and Co. on Bray’s estate on Friday night to inspect the completed road?, and if satisfactory to accept dedication. Authority was given the board by the Department of Internal Affairs to levy •rates and charges in connection with a water supply for the district. Mr. Kay and the clerk were appointed ;to wait on the Mayor, solicitor and ; clerk of the City Council, to state the board’s objection to the present system iof allocating the heavy traffic fees. The clerk’s action in fencing off the Panmure Springs to permit carts from i backing to the edge of the spring, and i the pollution of the water by animalsI was endorsed.
