Racing Under Wintry Conditions

TE AROHA CLUB’S UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

WINTRY conditions prevailed at Te Aroha yesterday afternoon, following on an overcast but warm morning. Rain set in just before the first race, and continued without intermission, being accompanied by a bitterly cold wind. Nevertheless the Te Aroha Racing Club brought its annual meeting to a most successful conclusion, the attendance being good. The course was in fine order at the commencement, but cut up a bit toward the end of the day. The conditions were extraordinary for a summer race meeting.

THERE were no untoward incidents A to come under the notice of the Judicial Committee. The meeting was conducted in keeping with the high standard set by the Te Aroha Club, which tends to make the fixture one of the most popular of the season. Despite the heavy rain the totalisator staff was kept particularly busy, and an increase on the two days was registered. The total for the meeting was £54,467, compared with £51,816, an increase of £2,651. This result must be regarded as very satisfactory. Notes on the racing and details of concluding results follow: Ladies Fight It Out Lady Spalpeen £591, Lady Cintra £555 and Gold Rain £458 were the popular selections in the Marawaru Hurdles. Red Comet and King Amans

went out in front early and were four lengths clear passing the stand from Potoanui, York Abbey, Kawa, Lady Spalpeen, Lady Cintra and Ring Potoa, with Gold Rain and Scat last. Down the back both Lady Spalpeen and Lady Cintra improved their positions, and turning for home were together, showing the way to Potoanui, Red Comet and Gold Rain. The ladies took the last hurdle together, and in the final issue Loomb’s mare did best to win by a length and a-half from -the favourite, with Potoanui, who finished very fast, half a length away third. Then came Red Comet, Gold Rain, Ring Potoa, King Amans and York Abbey. A Surprise Victory Five withdrawals reduced the field to 17 for the Elstow Hack Handicap.
