MOTOR-CYCLE TRIALS HELD AT WAITOMO
HIGH STANDARD ATTAINED ALL RIDERS COMPLETE COURSE The inaugural reliability trial of the Waitomo Motor-Cycle Club was held during the week-end, and proved a decided success, all the participants completing the 124 miles’ run between Te Kuiti and Ta.umarunui and back without serious mishap. The first rider was despatched at 7.30 a.m., and the remainder followed at two-minute intervals. The road, despite the fact that practically half the distance was unmetalled, was In excellent order, the rain on Friday having laid the dust and made travelling conditions pleasant. At the various checks en route, the competitors’ cards were filled In, and their destination was duly reached in a little over four hours. At Kopagi on the return trip an unexpected pleasure awaited the cyclists in the shape of afternoon tea, which was very kindly provided by' the proprietor of the Kopaki boarding-house, and was greatly appreciated by all. Immediately on arrival at Taumarunui, where the cyclists were welcomed by a number of citizens, the motorcycles were taken charge of, and the party adjourned to Hotel Cecil for lunch. The return trip was commenced at 1.27 p.m., Te Kuiti being reached by the last man at 6.6 p.m. The trial resulted as follows: Min. Pts. Pts. 1— R, DOUGHTY (Te Ku- L ° St L ° St iti), Indian Super Scout, winner of Solo Cup and first prize of £2 10s 4 20 180 2T. COLLIXGS (Tangitu), Harley-Davidson, second prize winner, £1 10s 7 35 165 3 G. STRINGER (Te Kuiti), Douglas, third prize. 10s 9 45 155 D. DUNKLET, Indian Scout and side-car , ■winner of Side-car Cup 5 25 150 The cup for the best side-car performance was presented by Mr. Roy Reardon, of Taumarunui, and the Solo Cup by Mr. F. O. Hewetson, of Te Kuiti. These cups have to be won three time at intervals or twice in succession.
