LATE MR. T. M. ALEXANDER
GOLD CUP IN HIS MEMORY A magnificent gold cup has been given to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron by the widow of the late Mr. T. M. Alexander, to be held by the winner of the annual cruising race to Te Kume. It will be known as the “T. M. Alexander Memorial Cold Cup.’’ and will be first raced for on March 10. The cup, which is a fine example of the goldsmiths’ art, was made in England by Walker and Hall. It is valued at 100 guineas. It is unfortunate that the trophy will not be to hand in time for the race.
The late Mr. Alexander was one of the most esteemed yachtsmen Auckland has ever known. Of a delightful nature, kindly, generous, and unselfish, he was loved by all his associates. It was no wonder, then, that he was known as “Father Tom.” He had not an enemy in the world, and men looked upon him as an example of all that a yachtsman should be. There* has never been a more enthusiastic yachtsman on the Waitemata, tnd he knew his yachts and understood them as only a true sailor knows how. His death in 1926. at the comparatively young age o’ r*l was a sad blow to yachting in Auckland, and his friends will always refer In affectionate terms to the memory of T. M. Alexander. ! : j
