Woodville Autumn Racing Concludes
SURPRISES IN CHIEF EVENTS FIVE FAVOURITES SCORE (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Saturday. The course at Woodville to-day was in great order. Softened by the recent rain, it provided the best going horses have had for weeks past. The weather was fine and the attendance fair. Both the principal handicaps resulted in surprises, Huikai winning the middle distance event and Miss Pat the sprint. The machine put through £12,972 on the day, leaving a deficit of £195 on the meeting com- * pared with last year. The figures i € were: 1927, £26,337; 1928, £26,142. c 1 A Poor Contest Like the jumping race on the first day, the Hopeland Hurdles was a poor contest. Panorama, who was favour- r ite, allowed the others to lead him till nearing home, when he ran to the . front and won by three lengths from t Blue Peter, who -was a couple of lengths clear of Sir Moment, with ( Polyphemus fourth. Maui Wins Nicely \ 1 Maui was the favourite for the . Novice Plate, and in the end he won nicely. Molong, Vindication. Red _ Bank and Skyrider were the early lead- J ers. Timi Inihi showed up nearing the straight, but once fairly in line ( for home Maui came out of the bunch and ran past the leaders to win by a „ length from Timi Inihi, who beat ® Lilock by a head. Then came Vin- j dication, with Molong and Skyrider. A Good Finish Of the Autumn Handicap field, David Garrick and Blimp were the best ba.cked, but neither filled a place. Epistle, Huikai and Blimp led through the straight from Arrow Lad and Royal Game, and along the back Epistle was clear of Huikai, Blimp and Arrow Lad, with Capitulation, Royal Game, Kilmiss and Blackmint next. Turning for home Capitulation, Epistle and Arrow Lad were in line at the head of affairs, and David Garrick and Huikai were challenging. Huikai ran on best and won by half a length from Capitulation, who was only a head in front of Epistle, while David Garrick was a close fourth and Arrow Lad, Kismiss and Blimp next. Aston Again Aston, who drew No. 1 at the barrier, won the Mangapapa Handicap all the way. He was not extended to win by a length and a-half from i Silver Tray, with Shining Star three- : quarters of a length away third, and Arch Arrow next. Aston carried his 10.2 and won very impressively. Favourite Beaten Crown Area, who was backed to odds on, was a good thing beaten in the Telegraph Handicap. Sarchee and Lin Arlington made the early running with Crown Area at the back. Crown j Area was last into the straight, and j failed by a length and a-half to get j to Miss Pat, who shot out a furlong 1 from home and finished very smartly. Royal Ceres was three lengths away third, and Sarchee fourth. Miss Pat paid the best dividend of the meeting, and her effort was very creditable. Crown Area, however, would have won - had he been taken nearer the front 1 early in the race. Mooregas Too Good * Amplifier and Mooregas carried the [ money in the Debutante Stakes. Mooregas and Millais led to the ; straight from Amplifier and Spearma, . with Agreeable next. Amplifier chals lenged as soon as the straight was L reached, but Mooregas was too good t and won by three-quarters of a length, , Amplifier a length and a-half clear of , Millais, with Australis and Agreeable j next. Cosmetic Gets Home : Cosmetic and Tresham were well L backed for the Mahahara Handicap. i Willow Wai led to the turn from Cosi metic, who then drew away and won nicely by a length from Lady Gay, with Tresham and Willow Wai almost in line with her. Tresham ran a great race and should not be long in getting a place. Lady Gay also went well. Swelling the Funds The Swell, a warm favourite, wound \ up the meeting by winning the Kume- ; roa Handicap very easily and paying * a good price.
