LANDED AT LAST
TWO POPULAR WINS JOE GEE’S SUCCESS Anseline’s consistency was duly rewarded on Wednesday, when after trotting a sound race from the back mark, driver J. Gee got her home nicely to score a popular and overdue victory. Not to be outdone by the success of her stable companion, the pacer Maid of the Mountains turned up in the very next race and credited the Grey Lynn owner-trainer with a dual win. There is an old saying, and no doubt a true one, that misfortune never comes alone, and judging by the stroke of luck which was the portion of Joseph Gee, the well known Auckland light-harness enthusiast on the second day of the Otahuhu fixture, it would appear that fortune also comes in double-barrelled guise. There was general approval among the spectators on Wednesday, when the consistent Anseline, trotting in
her best style, strolled home at the head of the field in the Suburban Handicap. but the public delight knew no bounds when in the following event Joseph, in his coat of amber, with black .trimmings, landed Maid of the Mountains a winner. With Charming Pronto, the Maid shared the distinction of being the outsider of the big field, and while the price paid was on the approach to half a century, the fact that only very few were participating in the good thing did not deter losers from expressing pleasure at trainer Gee’s good fortune. The Grey Lynn enthusiast has had a long run of outs, but his smile, even when things were all against him, never left his countenance, and he would always remark in optimistic terms, “The tide will turn one of these days.” Turn it did, and the hope will be expressed by all genuine sportsmen that J.G will find more big fish in his net before the tide again recedes.
