“CIVVIES” FOR SOLDIERS
Half a dozen regiments of the German Army are the subject of a sartorial experiment. For the tunic with ! a high stiff collar there is being substituted a coat open at the throat. When off duty the men are permitted to wear a white or field grey shirt with a soft collar of the same shade, and a field grey tie. Perhaps, it is hoped. : the sight of soldiers wearing collars and ties like other folk will stimulate : recruiting. A new British W'ar Office order cir- ’ culated at Aldershot gives command- : ing officers permission to allow sol- - di€*rs of good character to wear civilian clothes when walking out at their own station. Under the present regul ■ lations commanding officers can only . give permission to men below the rank j! of colour- sergeant to dress in plain clothes when cm furlough, or pass away from their station, and subject to the . : concurrence of the general officer : i commanding-in-chief when on pass t _ their station. The necessary amend - 1 ment is to be made to King’s Regula- . , Lons.
