“THE TEMPEST”
BARRYMORE’S GREAT ROLE Working all night in a sea of mud. in which at times horses and men sank so deep that they had to be pulled out with the aid of motor-trucks, the John Barrymore company filmed the most spectacular sequences of “Tempest,” a United Artists’ picture, with the Russian revolution as a background. Twenty-four giant sun arc lights turned night into day as the synthetic rainstorm raged in the set, several acres in area, at the United Artists' studio, Hollywood. Three hbndred actors, some of them veterans of prerevolution Czarist armies, worked in the scenes, which depict the trek of heavily-guarded chain gangs to the front in the World War. Barrymore, playing a Russian soldier who in the latter part of “Tempest” becomes the leader of a band of rebellious troops, presented a bedraggled appearance as he flounders through the mire. The night’s work was in strange contrast to scenes made the previous afternoon, when the star, immaculate in his officer’s uniform, danced with Camilla Horn at a court ball which picturised all the gaiety and luxury of the Russia that was. Besides Miss Horn, the supporting cast includes Luois Wolheim, of “Two Arabian Knights” fame: George Fawcett, Ullrich Haupt, Boris de Fas, Lena Malena and Albert Conti. * yf. *3K $£X r'r &SK SK 3ft & Other cinema and theatrical news and On the Air will be found on Page 12. * a? * ~
