Memories of Spectacular Match at Eden Park

Followers of cricket in Auckland were pleased to learn that Eddie McLeod, looked upon a few years back as one of the most promising - of the younger brigade of representative cricketers in this city, has now gained a place in the Wellington representative side, and played against the Australians. McLeod was in the Auckland side which played a drawn match with Charlie Macartney's New South Wales side at Eden Park in 1924. It was thanks to a fine partnership in the local eleven’s second innings (by McLeod and N. C. Snedden), which staved off defeat for the Aucklanders. Four wickets were down for less than 20, and then Dacre was clean-bowled by Macartney for a blob. McLeod joined Snedden, and together the pair stopped the rot, and commenced piling on the runs. McLeod was stumped by Oldfield for 50, and Snedden was orilliantly caught by Hendry for 40. A cricketer who had more than his share of bad luck in Auckland, it was nevertheless a great loss to local cricket when he left for Wellington. That was an Historic Match That match, New South Wales v. Auckland, was an historic game. Aucklanders turned out in hundreds to watch the two great Australian veteran batsmen, Bardsley and Macartney, the heroes of many tests with England. Bardsley they saw at his best in a fine fighting double century, the Cornstalk being undefeated when the last wicket fell. Groans arose, however, when Allcott clean-bowled Macartney for seven. Kippax played a typically bright innings for 60. Auckland was all out for 123 in the first innings, Snedden top scoring with 25. Alan Player was cheered to the echo when twice in succession he hoistsed Mailey over the fence for six. His 21 not out also included two fours and a single.
