CONGREGATION WINS EUCHARIST BATTLE

VICAR SENT ON LEAVE By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON", Thursday. The vicar of St. Cuthbert’s Church at Darwen, Lancashire, the Rev. E. Lauria, has been granted three months’ leave of absence, following on a conference of the parties to the controversy, convened by Bishop Blackburn. Pending a temporary appointment, the church has been closed.—A. and N.Z. The culmination of a series of dis-gx-aceful scenes in St. Cuthbert’s Church, Darwen, Lancashire, occurred last Sunday, when 1,200 people, protesting against the singing of the Eucharist, sang hymns and psalms, and laughed and talked throughout the service, and finally attacked the vicar and his police escort. On a previous occasion the police took the names of interrupters, while the clergy and choir took refuge in the vestry. The protesters sang the National Anthem. Another scene occurred on February 5. Four hundred people walked out of the church before the sermon was commenced. Hundreds of people followed Mr. Lauria to his home, but no hostile demonstration was made.
