Tiny Car Overturns At Terrific Speed
DRIVER HURLED OUT NEW ATTEMPT ON RECORD By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. NEW YORK, Wednesday. The American racing motorist, Mr. Frank Lockhart, was injured to-day at Daytona Beach, Florida. His car overturned while he was engaged in a speed trial, and ran into the sea at a rate of more than 200 miles an hour. The machine was completely wrecked. It is not thought that the driver’s injuries are dangerous. The British motorist, Captain Malcolm Campbell, intends to attempt to break his own recent record of 206.1)5 miles an hour to-morrow. —A. and N.Z. The car driven by Mr. F. Lockhart, America’s greatest track driver, was rated at only 23 h.p., but developed over 90 h.p. It was a small shell, convenient for hurtling through the air at high speeds. Its length is only 16 feet and it stood only 3 feet from the ground. At the widest point it was 2 feet across. The 16-cylinder engine had a bore of less than 2in. Mr. Lockhart has been a consistent performer on American motor race tracks for several years. At the end of 1926 he held seven American records, ranging from 132 J miles an hour for 25 miles to 953 miles an hour for the 400-mile Indianopolis classic. In 1927 his most notable performance was a flying mile record of 164 miles an hour.
