IS AUCKLAND CENTRE OF THE N.Z.A.A.A. PLAYING THE GAME GISBORNE ATHLETES SAY “NO” A communication from the Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club was received at the recent meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association complaining of the treatment received by them from the Auckland Centre, says “Miler,” writing in the “New Zealand Sportsman.” To “Miler’s” personal knowledge, the Auckland Centre has done very little to encourage amateur sport in the Gisborne district and the progress made has been in no way due to their assistance. Perhaps, lack of finance is responsible for many shortcomings, but this season things reached a climax. First, the Gisborne Club was not advised of the date of the Auckland championships—which by the way, were held at the beginning of the season—and, secondly, when Miss Wilson’s name was sent forward for the competition at the New Zealand championships, the Auckland Centre refused to assist financially. This caused much caustic comment and eventually the club paid the expenses incurred. On the occasions when Gisborne Club has been represented at Auckland championships, its members have a< - quitted themselves with great, credit. O. Paltridge having scored a win and McDonald and Douglas have secured places. It is the request of the Gisborne Club that it be granted permission V* secede from the Auckland Centre and link up with another and more lb*e body. For some time it was hoped that a Hawke’s Bay-Povertv Buy Centre would be formed, but “Miler” was informed by several officials that for preference they would now sooner be linked up with the Wellington Centr*-. There exists a strong feeling cf friendship between the Gisborne and Wellington Clubs and the recent visit ! of the ladies’ relay team has further improved friendly relations. The N.Z.A.A.A. has referred the letter to Gisborne for further particulars, nnd also have asked Auckland Centre for their ‘ side of the case.”
