TRAMS IMPROVE, BUT BUSES LOSE
REPORT FOR YEAR WILL DISCLOSE HEAVY DEFICIT
Under the new tram fares the Auckland trams have improved their position, and it is expected that the end of the financi.il year will disclose a good position. The bus position is not expected to be satisfactory. This was the position as stated by Cr. ,T. A. C. Alium, chairman of the Tramways Committee, in reply to The Sun this morning. Mr. Allum stated he could not give anv details at this stage.
Various economies, rearrangement of services, and the reduction of the number of stopping places, had cut down the running expenses of the trams, the saving on electric current alone being a considerable sum. In all he expected that the trams would finish the year with a credit, as usual. The continuation of the bus services, in order to meet the demands of the suburban bodies until the Transport Commission sits, has not enabled the bus finances to be very much improved, and as was the case last year, the buses will show a fairly substantial deficit, even after the tramway balance is credited against the undertaking. The question is whether the total deficit will reach the £39,000 odd of last year. Mr. Allum is inclined to think it will not.
