THOMSON’S HOBBY

TRAINING HORSES Training horses is a hobby with Fred Thomson. The amazing things that Silver King, his famous white mount, does in pictures are all the result of his training and the obvious fondne&s which the horse has for his master.

Thomson has a stable full of horses and he spends much of his spare time with them. Horses vary in personality and intelligence as widely as humans, Thomson says. He studies them carefully and teaches them tricks by means of voice tones and pantomime. Silver King has become so accustomed to this method of teaching that he will do entirely new tricks in every picture with one to two rehearsals.

During the making of “The Pioneer Scout” for Paramount, Mr. Thomson taught the horse to crowd in with a group of horses at a watering trough, to act annoyed when he could not reach the water, and then to back out, go and get a bucket and dip out a pail of water for himself by going around to the other side of the trough.
