STRUGGLE IN SURF

GOOD RESCUE WORK (Special to THE SUN.J NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. Some fine life-saving work was done on the Ohawe Beach, near Hawera, on Sunday, by Mr. L. Hunt. He was swimming about when he saw two girls in trouble in a whirlpool area, caused by the meeting of cross waves. He swam to them, and taking them by the arms, tried to tow them to the beach. Half-way in, another swimmer took one of the girls, and Mr. Hunt reached the shore with the other. He had hardly landed when he saw that the other rescuer, with the girl, had drifted further out. Mr. Hunt shouted to the crowd on the beach to make a human chain, and after a little delay, a chain of 50 persons was formed. Two other bathers who had got into difficulties had just been passed in. and Mr. Hunt, who was on the end of the chain, had just grasped the first two when the chain broke near the end. The eight bathers thus separated, struggled ashore. All, however, say that Air. Hunt was the mainstay of the rescue work, and that he personally saved the lives of at least three bathers.
