GOBLIN MARKET’S NARROW WIN MIDDLE PARK PLATE RACING AT RICCARTON (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The Canterbury Jockey Club held its summer meeting at Riccarton to-day in glorious weather. There was a fair attendance, and the course was in excellent order. The totalisator handled £20,045, against £20,146. QUARTERDECK SCORES Ruminant was backed down to a short price for the opening event, but after having every chance in the straight the Thurnham filly succumbed a furlong from home and finished outside a place. Moratorium was quickest to begin, but after a furlong had been covered Luminant and Lancer took charge, and this pair led along the back from Moratorium, Heather Lad, Carnot and The Harp, with Quarterdeck last. Luminant and Lancer were still in charge across the top, and they led into the straight .’rom Luminant, Lancer, Heather Lad, Quarterdeck and Carnot. Luminant was in front with a furlong to go, but at the distance Quarterdeck came fast on the outside, and maintaining her strong run. beat Moratorium in comfortable style by a length and a-half. Red Heather was a neck away, third, followed by Carnot, Luminant and Lancer. Quarterdeck put up an attractive performance. She was slow to move and after the field had gone a furlong she was last. Four furlongs from home, however, she made a fast run on the outside, and though she was wide out entering the straight she sustained her strong run over the last furlong and scored a meritorious victory. MASON’S OUTSIDER Amor wound up favourite for the Hornby Handicap, but there was also solid support for Scoff, Rhondda, Fair Exchange and Phillipic. The latter was quickest to begin and he led early from Some Abbey, Greyfinch, Amor, Fair Exchange and Scoff. There was no alteration entering the straight, but a furlong from home Phillipic drew away from Some Abbey and beat her home by two lengths. Amor was a length in front of Rhondda, while next to finish were Scoff and Fair Exchange. AN EXCITING CLASSIC FINISH Though the Middle Park Plate was voted as a good thing for the Absurd youngster Goblin Market, the six furlong race developed into one of the most thrilling contests seen at Riccnrton for some time. From a walk-up start Rigmarole was first to show out, and she was immediately rushed to the front and set a terrific pace in the early stages. Chide ran up to Rigmarole at the entrance to the course proper, and was first to turn for homo from Goblin Market, with Full Feather a couple of lengths away, slightly .•head of Rigmarole. Two furlongs from home Chide gained a break of three lengths on Goblin Market, and at that stage the Paladin gelding looked 1 certain winner. However, Gobliri Market unwound a powerful run over the last furlong and catching Chide 2 5 yards from the post, beat him homo by a neck. Full Feather was six lengths away, third, with Rigmarole twelve lengths further back. ARIKIWAI’S HANDICAP
Backed down to a short price for the Midsummer Handicap, Arikiwai never gave his supporters any cause for anxiety. He was never further back than second, and after entering the straight he galloped right away from liis opponents and defeated Thorndale in most convincing style by two lengths. Satrap had every chance, but was well beaten into third place. After tli© placed horses came Assurance, Countersign and Front Rank. SURPRISE IN JUVENILE The bracketed pair, Impertinence and Prickles, wound up favourite for the Lyttelton Plate. However, a surprise in store lor backers, x for it was an outsider in Great Star to Bk cati Add home. Great Star was
smartest to begin and showed the way on to the course proper from Amourette, Merivale and Impertinence. Great Star was first to turn for home, and going on beat Impertinence by a. length. Prickles, who finished fast, was close up, third, followed by Synonym and Amourette. The winner returned his supporters a big price. IN WINNING VEIN Sudden Storm was backed down to a short price for the Craven Plate, and though badly placed for the first four furlongs, finished with great determination in the straight and defeated Gold Brick by half a head. Finora was the early leader, and she was well clear entering the straight from Rascal, Gold Brick and Moorland. Rascal was in front with a furlong to go, but at the distance post Gold Brick took command and led Sudden Storm. In a great finish Sudden Storm just got up in time to defeat Gold Brick on the post. Rascal was well up in third place, while Magna Charta, who lost at least ten lengths at the start, finished on in fine style into fourth place. A HOT ONE DOWNED Golden Armour went to the post firm favourite for the Halswell Handicap. The favourite was in front two furlongs from home, but finishing in good style Te Awhina beat Golden Armour by two lengths. Money Mine was four
lengths away third, with Rotor at the head of the remainder. The winner, who is a three-year-old daughter of Paper Money, is a very promising sort and looks like developing into a firstclass sprinter. Golden Armour had every chance, but was no match for Te Awhina over the last bit. FINAL TO FIRST SIGHT Hoylake was first to show out in the Post Handicap, but Margaret Birney joined him in the lead after two furlongs had been covered. Margaret Birney led across the top from Hoylake, Money Peer and Carnot, and the same order was maintained into the straight. First Sight hit the front inside the distance and went on to beat Margaret Birney by a clear length. Hoylake was a length away, third, followed by Money Peer, Carnot and Ophir.
