SPORT OR MISCHIEF
INFLUENCE OF CRICKET DANGER OF IDLENESS It is better to steal singles through the slips than confectionery thorugh a shop window. Mrs. N. E. Ferner, Associate Magistrate at the Children’s Court this morning expressed the opinion that cricket and kindred sports acted as a much-needed serum on the latent germ of hooliganism in boys. Sport of any healthy nature provided an outlet for that brimming energy which, if temporarily bottled, would lead to deeds of what might appear inexplicable mischief.
Mrs. Ferner’s advice to the fathers and mothers of four boys who were charged with stealing confectionery from a suburban store, was that they should see that their children participated in organised games all the year round. The effect of the team spirit in the boys’ characters would soon be apparent.
An opinion was also expressed that the physical influence of games would probably lessen the lure that sweet confectionery has always had for small boys.
