PAINTING COMPETITION

THE picture of the squirrel babies in their tree-top cradle was responsible for a record number of entries and a high standard of work. The competition has been won by Betty Johanson, Weymouth, whose painting is a delightful study in excellent taste and finished with a sepia mount. Betty has paid particular attention to the shading with very happy results, and her orange flowers nestling among the foliage stand out vividly against the light blue sky. Mother Squirrel is depicted in a smart frock of saxe blue, while her apron, like the pillow and quilt, is finished in Chinese white.

A special prize has been won by Walter Pearce, Grey Lynn, for originality and detail work. This Sunbeam has carried out a novel scheme in tempera colours with a clever cloud effect above the steeple. The squirrel babies nestle snugly beneath a bright patchwork quilt, while Mrs. Squirrel’s apron is lightly patterned in red. Worthy of special mention is the work of Joyce Ludlow, Ponsonby, who has painted in some realistic clouds and a gleam of orange sunset. Ada Wilkins’s picture is delightfully quaint, and Mrs. Bquirrel looks well content in her pink frock and old-fashioned bluets prigged apron. The results are as follow;
