FREESIAS FOR EARLY WINTER
The potting of various bulbs for winter decoration of the living rooms needs to be seen to this month. The longer the season of growth, the better for the blooms that later on will be produced. The delicate beauty and sweet fragrance of the freesia will not easily be forgotten by those who have grown this bulbous plant in the past and their first thought now will be for the freesia. Six bulbs in a 6in. pot will give a grand display of bloom if started into new growth now. Leaf mould, freely mixed with good turfy loam, is used to fill the pots, w'hich need to be provided with the usual crock-drainage, the bulbs being inserted to such a depth that the tips just show above the surface. It is worth while to grade the bulbs according to size, though freesia bulbs are always surprisingly small when the mass of flowers and foliage produced is considered. Each pot should contain bulbs of the same size, for the sake of uniformity when growth commences.
The potting completed, the pots can be heeled in the open ground and well watered until the flower buds appear when they can be brought inside for house decoration.
