EMPIRE
BIG DOUBLE BILL Barbara B.edford, who hks been a favourite with th© fans since he.r splendid work in “Tumbleweeds,” Bill Hart’s last picture, is now to be seen in “Sunshine of Paradise Alley” at the Empire Theatre. Unlike Thompson’s other great play, • Sunshine of Paradise Alley,” a Master Picture release, is laid in the heart of New York’s slums, the great East Side with its smatterings of peoples and customs of many lands. Here is the true “melting pot,” that is America. Here many races, meeting on common ground, provide the new blood that is keeping America alive and young.
Denman Thompson’s play, which has been adapted for the screen by Josephine Quirk, is an accurate picture of this Paradise Alley. Their heartaches and sorrows, their joys and laughter is the theme of this stage masterpiece. Jack Nelson, whose rare versatility is reflected in his several Douglas Mac Lean comedies, and Louis Glaum dramas, directed the production. “The Bugle Call,” starring Jackie Coogan, is also being shown.
