HAMILTON WATER
POSITION SERIOUS PUMPS GIVING WAY HAMILTON, To-day. I Unless Hamilton residents use every economy in the consumption of water they will be threatened with the cutting off of the entire supply, the position having assumed a most serious aspect. I On© of the centrifugal pumps sia denly ceased to function at 7.50 o'clo \ last night, when it was discovered th th© phosphor-bronze bearings had h completely worn out due to the grinding action of the fine pumice s brought down by the Waikato from i Arapuni. Boili pumps had been wearing badly, but it was anticipated they would 1«->l out until the new auxiliary pump h id been obtained from Arapuni and installed. The additional pump should have been in operation to-night, but j owing to th© staff having to repair the | existing plant, it will probably not be ; working until to-morrow night. Th© new pump is capable of takii 60.000 gallons an hour from and dealing with th© whole Hamilton supp!> Whent it is in operation the load would probably be transferred. It is relieving th© present two and allowing their immediate overhaul, besides th© *> - placement of the bearings and the buiance of the discs. The pump is temporarily out of action. It will, probably, require a new impeller. Yesterday the consumption of wat r reached 1,300.000 gallons, and as tlv capacity of on© pump working is only to 792.000, the draw off will con-
sequnelty have to be reduced in proportion to the decreased pumping capac - ity. In event of th© burden being too heavy th© whole supply will have *t> be cut off.
